Farmer killed by wild jumbo in New Riphyim

CorrespondentWOKHA, AUG 3 (NPN)

A 72-year-old farmer, Rentsamo Odyuo of New Riphyim Village under Wokha district, was killed in a wild elephant attack on August 2 while returning from his rubber plantation.
Villagers raised the alarm after his sudden disappearance on Saturday evening. A search operation launched early Sunday led to the recovery of his body, which bore injuries consistent with an elephant attack.
According to residents, a herd of around 15 elephants—including calves—has been lingering near the village, disturbing farming and daily activities. They expressed strong resentment over repeated damages caused by the elephants and criticised the authorities for failing to respond effectively.
They warned that unless concrete measures are taken, they may be compelled to adopt traditional methods to protect their lives and livelihoods.
Meanwhile, Dimapur Wildlife Warden H Tokaho Kinimi, visited the village, met with the bereaved family, and held a meeting with residents to assess the situation. Further details are awaited.
