As part of its ongoing initiative to promote sustainable agriculture and enhance onion and vegetable cultivation in Nagaland, the NEH Component of Onion and Garlic under the School of Agricultural Sciences (SAS), Nagaland University, Medziphema Campus, organised two Farmers-Scientist Interaction Programmes and Input Distribution Camps at New Socünoma village on September 17 and Medziphema village on September 18.
Project incharge and scientist, Dr. Moakala Changkiri, encouraged farmers to adopt onion cultivation and vermicomposting as integrated farming strategies to improve crop quality, boost yields, and enhance soil health. She urged farmers to become agents of change within their communities by embracing sustainable practices.
To support the initiative, participating farmers were provided with falcon garden tool kits comprising khurpi, hand rake, long shovel, and root digger to assist in daily horticultural activities. Selected progressive farmers under the NEH Component also received complete input packages for setting up vermicompost units. These included portable vermi-beds, vermiworms, battery-operated combo sprayers, neem oil, soldier, and shovels to facilitate organic composting alongside onion cultivation.
A key highlight of the programme was a hands-on demonstration on vermicomposting conducted by STINER Project Assistant, Ghimere, under the guidance of STINER Nodal officer, Prof. Akali Sema.
