A one-day training programme on cardamom plantation was organized by district horticulture office (DHO), Wokha on May 26 at farmer’s field, Koio village with progressive cardamom planter Man Bahadur Limbo from Sikkim. At the programme, Limbo demonstrated how to set up commercially viable cardamom plantation.
DHO Wokha, Meyasashi informed that large cardamom cultivation was becoming quite remunerative for farmers because of the high demand in the international market.
Three varieties of cardamom namely– golsey, varlangey and ramsey — were recommended for cultivation in NE States because the altitude ranged from 600-2350 meter above mean sea level (msl).
He also highlighted about the present price of cured capsule which is Rs 85,000 per 40 kg in Sikkim and Rs 95,000 in Siliguri. Altogether, 28 farmers from Longsachung, Niroyo, Wokha village and Koio attended the training programme. The farmers were the beneficiaries of Central Government flagship scheme of MIDH implemented by horticulture department. The department has taken up 24 hectares of large cardamom plantation covering four villages under Wokha district during 2014-15.
