Ahead of the “Fire Service Week”, the Nagaland Fire & Emergency Services has issued Dos and Don’ts for the people to follow during fire incidents. In a press release, DIG(F&ES) Nagaland called for giving safety a serious consideration, saying one should take precautionary measures and see that it does not become a catastrophe.
Pointing out that fire prevention was better than fire fighting, the department stressed and called for eliminating and minimizing the risks of fire.

Call & Inform fire brigade immediately as and when fire breaks out. Do not panic
Do not misuse Fire Service telephone numbers. It is a punishable offence
Give right and precise information
Use appropriate fire extinguishers at initial stage to contain fire
Do not pour water on oil and electric fire. Use appropriate extinguishers
Inform power department to cut-off power line in the locality to avoid further catastrophe
Give way to fire tenders to pass unobstructed for timely execution
Locate the fire incident site – show and guide fire personnel the shortest possible route
Locate source and supply water at the vicinity of the fire incident
Do not disturb/drag fire delivery hoses while fire personnel are combating fire
Install proper fire extinguishers/fire alarms/smoke detectors/fire hydrants/sprinkler system etc
Maintain small water reserve tank to tackle fire before fire fighters arrive
Kitchen fire, LPGs, candles, lamps etc, should be properly extinguished when not in use
Use certified and standard electrical appliances viz. wires, plugs, fuse, switches, sockets, etc
Practise family evacuation drill/plans
Store water at home to meet fire emergencies (for fire of woods, paper, textiles etc)
Do not burn waste materials when strong wind is blowing (also, always take it out to some distance from human dwellings)
Fire Service week
Meanwhile, Nagaland Fire & Emergency Services would join other Fire Services across the country in observing the “Fire Service Week” from April 14-20, 2018.
April 14 is observed as “Martyrs Day” every year to pay homage to those brave fire personnel who lost their lives while performing their duty.
The day has been set aside for mass awareness campaign on fire hazards and safety measures in following places: Kohima(S) — P.H.Q Jn. at 10am and High School Jn at 12 noon; Dimapur — Clock Tower at 10am and Super Market at 12 noon; Chumukedima — Chumukedima bazaar at 10am and 2nd gate at 12 noon; Mon — Bazaar line at 10 am and New Site Jn. at 12 noon; Phek — DC office junction at 10am and Police point at 12 noon; Tuensang — Tower clock at 10am and High School Jn. at 12 noon; Zunheboto — DC office Jn. at 10am and Police point at 12 noon; Mokokchung – Sungkomen at 10am and Police point at 12 noon; Wokha — Police point at 10am and Zero point at 12 noon; Kiphire — DC Office Jn. at 10am and Bazaar Jn. 12 noon; Peren — Police point at 10am and New Jalukie Bazaar at line at 12 noon; Longleng — Adjoining Leinak and Shamkang Ward- Police point at 10am and NST Jn. at 12 noon and Tuli — Tuli Bazaar at 10am and City Gaon Valley at 12 noon.
