In a major boost to advanced healthcare in Nagaland, Faith Hospital and Institute of Medical Sciences (FHIMS) has introduced the state’s first Carl Zeiss NC4 Neurosurgical Microscope.
The equipment was inaugurated by Dr. Sukhato A. Sema MLA on Wednesday, with dedicatory prayer offered by associate pastor of DSBC, Avika Awomi.
Speaking to media persons, consultant neurosurgeon Dr. Alangsungyu Ajem described the introduction of the microscope as a transformative step for the state’s healthcare system. He explained that neurosurgery involves extremely delicate structures where even minor deviations can result in serious complications, and emphasized that micro-neurosurgery under a microscope has become the standard of care.
“This technology allows us to visualize structures not visible to the naked eye, helping us perform more accurate and safer surgeries, which ultimately leads to better patient outcomes,” he said.
Dr. Ajem added that while surgery duration may vary, the primary advantage lies in enhanced precision and safety rather than reduced operation time.
He expressed optimism that the facility would reduce the need for patients to travel outside the state for advanced neurosurgical care, noting that treatments at FHIMS are covered under Chief Minister Health Insurance Scheme (CMHIS) and Ayushman Bharat.
The Carl Zeiss NC4 Neurosurgical Microscope is a state-of-the-art system designed to enhance surgical precision, safety, and outcomes in complex procedures involving the brain and spine. Equipped with a beam splitter and assistant observation tube, it allows both surgeon and assistant to simultaneously view the surgical field with clarity, improving coordination during operations.
Featuring high-definition binocular optics, the microscope provides three-dimensional visualization of delicate anatomical structures, enabling surgeons to distinguish between healthy and diseased tissue with remarkable accuracy. The system is particularly critical in neurosurgery, ENT, spine, and micro-vascular procedures.
