HOUSTON/SEATTLE/FOXBOROUGH/PHILADELPHIA/SAN FRANCISCO, JUN 20 (IANS/PTI): Several teams strengthened their positions in the FIFA World Cup 2026 group stage on Saturday, with the Netherlands, United States, Morocco, Brazil and Paraguay all securing important victories as the race for knockout-stage qualification intensified.
Netherlands thrash Sweden 5-1 to top Group F
The Netherlands bounced back strongly from their opening draw against Japan by overwhelming Sweden 5-1 in Houston to move to the top of Group F.
Striker Brian Brobbey starred with two first-half goals while Cody Gakpo also netted twice and provided an assist in a dominant Dutch performance. The victory lifted the Netherlands to four points from two matches, putting them ahead of Sweden, who remained on three points after suffering one of their heaviest World Cup defeats.
The Dutch wasted little time taking control. Brobbey opened the scoring in the fifth minute when he converted a precise cross from Gakpo with a first-time finish. The striker doubled the advantage 12 minutes later, sliding in to steer Denzel Dumfries’ cross into the far corner. After leading 2-0 at halftime, the Netherlands resumed their assault immediately after the break. Gakpo made it 3-0 in the 47th minute following another delivery from Dumfries before adding his second goal seven minutes later with a clinical finish from inside the box.
Sweden managed to pull one back through Anthony Elanga in the 59th minute, but it proved little more than a consolation. Goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen had already frustrated the Swedish attack with a string of impressive saves in the first half. The Swedes thought they had reduced the deficit before halftime through Gustaf Lagerbielke, but the goal was ruled out for offside.
US reach knockout stage after defeating Australia
In Seattle, hosts United States became one of the first teams to secure a place in the knockout rounds after defeating Australia 2-0 in a Group D clash. The Americans, playing without injured captain Christian Pulisic, collected their second consecutive victory to reach six points from two matches and guarantee qualification for the Round of 32.
The breakthrough came in the 11th minute when Folarin Balogun delivered a dangerous low cross into the penalty area. Australian defender Cameron Burgess, attempting to clear the ball, inadvertently turned it into his own net.
Australia struggled to recover from the early setback and found it difficult to break down a disciplined American defence.
The hosts doubled their lead just before halftime when Alex Freeman rose highest to head home. The goal marked a memorable moment for the young defender, whose father Antonio Freeman was a Super Bowl-winning wide receiver in the NFL.
Morocco Edge Scotland to Take Control of Group C
Morocco continued their impressive World Cup campaign with a disciplined 1-0 victory over Scotland in Foxborough to move to the summit of Group C.
The North Africans needed just 71 seconds to break the deadlock, with Ismael Saibari scoring the fastest goal of the tournament at the time. A perfectly weighted pass from Brahim Diaz split the Scottish defence, allowing Saibari to finish confidently beyond the goalkeeper.
The early strike stunned Scotland and set the tone for a match largely dominated by Morocco. The African side pressed aggressively, controlled possession and consistently threatened the Scottish defence.
Saibari’s goal was his second of the tournament, having also scored in Morocco’s opening draw against Brazil. The midfielder continued to impress throughout the contest as Morocco dictated proceedings in midfield. Scotland struggled to create chances and did not register a significant effort until injury time of the first half.
Cunha double inspires Brazil against Haiti
Brazil responded emphatically to criticism following their opening draw by defeating Haiti comfortably in Philadelphia and climbing to the top of Group C on goal difference.
Forward Matheus Cunha was the standout performer, scoring twice in a convincing display that showcased Brazil’s attacking quality under coach Carlo Ancelotti. The five-time world champions took the lead in the 23rd minute in fortunate circumstances. Vinicius Junior’s effort was saved by Haitian goalkeeper Johny Placide, but the rebound struck Cunha and ricocheted into the net.
Cunha doubled Brazil’s advantage nine minutes before halftime. After receiving a pass from Vinicius Junior, he unleashed a powerful strike into the top corner to complete an impressive first-half performance.
Teenage sensation Endrick thought he had marked his World Cup debut with a goal late in the game, only for the effort to be ruled out for offside.
Paraguay beat Türkiye to keep dream alive
Paraguay kept their World Cup campaign alive with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Türkiye in San Francisco despite playing an entire half with ten men.
The decisive moment came after just 64 seconds when midfielder Matias Galarza unleashed a powerful long-range strike into the bottom corner. The goal established a new record for the fastest goal of the tournament, surpassing Saibari’s earlier mark of 71 seconds.
Paraguay appeared comfortable for much of the opening half before controversy struck in stoppage time. Miguel Almirón received a straight red card following a VAR review under FIFA’s newly introduced disciplinary regulation regarding players covering their mouths during confrontations. Reduced to ten men, Paraguay were forced onto the defensive after halftime as Türkiye dominated possession and launched repeated attacks in search of an equaliser. However, Paraguay’s defence stood firm under pressure and successfully protected their narrow lead until the final whistle.
