SHILLONG, AUG 31: A man in Meghalaya has lodged an FIR against an Enforcement Directorate (ED) officer, alleging assault during questioning in connection with a case related to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC).
The complaint was filed at Nongmynsong Police Station by advocate Niksrang Ch. Marak on behalf of his client, Sansilstone Sangma, who claimed he was physically assaulted by ED Investigating Officer Shekar Kumar on August 27 while recording his statement following a summons.
According to the FIR, Sangma was not resisting or obstructing the questioning and the alleged use of force was described as “wholly unwarranted and disproportionate.” The complaint stated that Sangma suffered pain and swelling in his forearm and hand, for which he was treated at Civil Hospital, Shillong.
Marak requested police to collect Sangma’s medical records, injury reports, prescriptions and other related documents as part of the investigation. He also sought immediate preservation of CCTV footage from the ED premises, including recordings of the relevant room, corridors, entry and exit points and surrounding areas, to prevent deletion or tampering.
The lawyer further urged police to identify and examine ED officers, staff and others present at the time of the alleged incident. He stated that the allegations prima facie disclosed cognizable offences under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, though the specific sections would depend on medical evidence, CCTV footage and witness statements.
Marak has sought registration of the FIR, a fair and impartial investigation, preservation of electronic and documentary evidence and examination of the ED officer allegedly involved. He also requested appropriate legal action against anyone found responsible and sought an acknowledgement of the complaint along with a copy of the FIR, if registered.
