FIR filed against officer after NSWC complaint

Correspondent

Nagaland Police has filed an FIR against joint secretary, Planning and Transformation and Industrial Development Authority of Nagaland (IDAN) Reny Wilfred, IAS after the Nagaland State Women Commission (NSWC) forwarded complaints of alleged sexual assault from several women.

When contacted by this Correspondent, Nagaland DGP Rupin Sharma, IPS confirmed that FIR was filed but provided no further details as probe was on.

Subsequently, the Department of Personnel & Administrative Reforms (P&AR) through a noti-fication on April 4, relieved him of charge of the departments with immediate effect.

Nagaland State Women Commission (NSWC) officials disclosed to this Correspondent, that on receipt of information in February, the Commission eventually managed to meet several of the victims. The Commission then took down verbal statements and forwarded it to the state police for investigation.

Several officials also admitted that this was the second FIR against Reny Wilfred who had earli-er been booked for alleged sexual offence on two under aged girls while as the first Deputy Commissioner of Noklak in 2020-21.

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Nagaland Police filed a chargesheet in December 2021 after finding the officer prima facie guilty and booked him under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POSCO) Act, 2012 as well as IPC sections.

According to reports in sections of national media, the trial ran into delay after the officer sought transfer from the Special POSCO Court in Tuensang citing “threat to his life.”
The high court granted stay despite Nagaland Police maintaining that the “perjury was deliberately and wilfully committed by him”.

Later when the court vacated the stay, it was reported that Wilfred challenged this before the Supreme Court and obtained a stay against his trial in June 2023. However on July 2023 the Apex court vacated its interim stay and allowed the officer to request to appear in the trial court proceedings over video conference.
