Fire Service Week 2026 was observed across Nagaland from April 14 to 20 under the theme “Safe School, Safe Hospital and Fire Safety Aware Society – Together for Fire Prevention”.
At Fire Station Kiphire, the week-long programme honoured firefighters who laid down their lives in the line of duty, commemorating the anniversary of the 1944 Bombay Dock Explosion. Activities included fire safety drills, demonstrations, sports events under the Fit India Movement, and an essay competition. Suli T. Sangtam won the first prize, followed by Ivy C. Sure and Suzila L. Sangtam. Altogether, 19 students from Agape Higher Secondary School, Kiphire participated.
Meanwhile, the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of North East Christian University (NECU), in collaboration with Fire Station Central Dimapur, conducted a mock drill on April 20. Fire personnel explained the four categories of fire hazards—Class A (solid materials), Class B (flammable liquids), Class C (gases), and Class D (metals)—and demonstrated the use of water, foam, dry powder and carbon dioxide extinguishers.
Practical sessions included handling gas cylinder leakages, with emphasis on replacing regulators every five years and pipes every two years, as well as checking expiry markings on cylinders. Students were given hands-on training in operating extinguishers.
Competitions were also held during the week, with Wadechaba Aier, Likhuvu Zhimo and Khelileng winning prizes in poster making, while Lovito A. Shohe, Peshie H. and Luolavor Louis secured top positions in essay writing.
Winners were felicitated with cash prizes and certificates sponsored by the Directorate of Fire & Emergency Services, Nagaland.
