Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS), Imphal has achieved a historic breakthrough in orthopaedic surgery by successfully performing its first Artificial Intelligence (AI) AI navigated total knee replacement. The first surgery of its kind was successfully on a 60-year-old woman patient.
Orthopaedic and Joint Replacement Specialist Dr Angamba Heisnam was behind the successful surgery. He underwent training in AI navigation and Robotic Joint Replacement at Wrightington Hospital United Kingdom recently.
The doctor told reporters that “the operation was conducted on a patient named Gambhini Devi of Bahsikhong (Imphal East district) who had osteoarthritis of knee grade IV on December 4 last.
She was successfully discharged on December 7 after mobilization and other related examinations, he added.
Dr Angamba said “the advantage of employing this new technology is that it enables swift recovery after operation and complications related to operation are significantly reduced.”
In 2017, Dr Angamba and his team conducted the first total knee replacement in the state at JNIMS.
The JNIMS is a premier state funded medical college and hospital. It is the second largest healthcare centre in Manipur after Centre funded Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS).
