The induction programme for the first batch of MBBS students at Nagaland Institute of Medical Sciences & Research (NIMSR) Kohima was held at the Academic Block, Phriebagie, here on Friday.

Speaking at the programme as special guest, state chief secretary, J Alam, said the induction programme was not just the beginning of a new academic year, but a memorable moment for the whole state as the vision of having a medical college in the state finally became a reality.

Alam said the induction of MBBS students was the beginning of a transformative journey, which would shape the future of healthcare in Nagaland and beyond. Alam pointed out that NIMSR received the Letter of Permission from National Medical Commission (NMC) for admission to 100 MBBS seats for the academic year 2023-2024. He said that this paved the way to start the first medical college in the State after 60 years of Statehood, realising the long-cherished dream of the people of Nagaland.

On the progress of the construction of the college from the start till date, Alam said the pace of physical development was satisfactory and lauded all officers and workers who had given their efforts relentlessly. “Today I am reminded of the fact that we are now about to begin an incredible journey that will not only change the professional lives of the Naga people and others through research, education and patient care,” Alam said. The chief secretary expressed confidence that the establishment of NIMSR and induction of the first batch would change and reshape the whole landscape of healthcare in Nagaland for better.

“As much as it is exhilarating there comes many responsibilities for each of us,” Alam added.
He said the institute would be tasked to not just educate minds but nurture the future caretakers of human health, adding that the gravity of this responsibility was more on the faculty members who would mould the characters of future physicians.

He assured the faculty that NIMSR have the full support of the state government. He said government was fully committed to providing the best technical and infrastructural resources.
Alam also expressed hope that the faculty members, with their expertise and dedication, would help NIMSR become a centre of excellence of national and international importance.

Alam paid homage to all the former directors, commissioner & secretaries and other officers of the medical department who had assisted in one way or the other towards the new institute.
The chief secretary observed that there were many more things to be done at the campus and other challenges might also come up. However, he exuded confidence that the government would address all those challenges.
He extended a warm welcome to all the students and faculty and wished them the best in their new journey together

Delivering a short speech, principal director health & family welfare, Dr. Ritu Thurr, welcomed the new students and faculty. He urged them to work hard, maintain their commitment to serve the people and strive for success.

NIMSR director and dean Prof. Dr. Soumya Chakraborty gave the introduction and also delivered the welcome address informed that the first batch has 100 MBBS students—85 from Nagaland and 15 from other parts of the country. Earlier, Angami Baptist Church Council (ABCC) executive director, Rev. Dr. Rachülie Vihienuo offered the prayer for the induction programme.
