First IUI clinic launched; Nova IVF partners Dr. Belho’s Hospital

Staff Reporter

In a significant milestone for healthcare in Nagaland, Dimapur on Saturday witnessed the launch of its first Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) clinic at Dr. Belho’s Clinic and Children’s Hospital, in collaboration with Nova IVF. The facility promises affordable fertility care with emphasis on accessibility and reduced costs.
Addressing a press conference at the hospital conference hall, proprietor and consultant gynaecologist Dr. Mhasiseno T. Belho termed the occasion “long-awaited,” noting that the partnership with Nova IVF would make advanced fertility techniques available locally.
She highlighted that Nova IVF, with its base in Spain, had already facilitated over one lakh deliveries across India and Southeast Asia.
Senior IVF specialist Dr. Mujibur Rahman, recalling his association with the late Dr. Belho in 1992, expressed privilege in working with the second generation.
He pointed out that infertility affected one in six couples, with modern data showing equal incidence between male and female partners.
Lifestyle changes, smoking, drug abuse and delayed marriages, he said, were major contributing factors.
Dr. Rahman explained that the IUI procedure involved washing the husband’s sperm and placing it inside the mother’s womb, with all apparatus now available at the hospital. He added that IVF services would also be introduced in the near future, with initial stimulation done in Dimapur to reduce patients’ stay in Guwahati to about a week.
Nova IVF Guwahati centre operations head, Mohit Singla, said the organisation was known for transparency in pricing, self-cycle focus and experienced embryologists, with over 160 centres across India and operations in Bangladesh.
On affordability, Dr. Belho informed that while IUI elsewhere cost around Rs. 20,000 per cycle, the new clinic would offer it at below Rs. 10,000. IVF, which generally ranged between Rs. 3–5 lakh, would begin at Rs. 1.3 lakh per cycle.
She added that discussions were underway with the Health Minister for inclusion of IUI/IVF under Ayushman Bharat or CMHIS.
Dr. Rahman assured that IVF was now safe and painless, with ovum pick-up performed under anaesthesia. He dismissed myths about long-term health risks for IVF children, citing over four decades of data since the first IVF birth in 1978.
He also stressed that strict protocols under the ART Bill (2021–22) prohibited gender selection, with violators facing up to 10 years imprisonment.
Earlier, a free IVF camp themed “A Step Toward Parenthood” was held at the clinic, where 20 patients availed consultation from Dr. Rahman.
