A six-day Community First Responder (CFR) training programme organised by Can Youth in partnership with the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) kicked off on Monday at Old Chumoukedima Town Council Hall.
The event saw participation from 100 individuals, with 10 trained resource persons from Can Youth leading the sessions. Chumoukedima Town Council chairman, Lhousituo Khruo, attended as the special guest, while DDMA Chumoukedima nodal officer, Rendemo Shitio, was the guest of honour.
In his address, Khruo highlighted the rising number of disasters and blamed human negligence for worsening impacts. He urged participants to take preparedness seriously and contribute actively towards community safety. He also spoke about recent floods affecting all 11 wards under the council and said plans are being made to improve drainage systems and road infrastructure. He called on residents to work together and be willing to contribute land for development.
Rendemo Shitio stressed the importance of quick response during the “Golden Hour” after a disaster and encouraged nature-resilient planning to reduce future risks. Can Youth founder, Jenpu Rongmei, shared that the goal of the training is to build stronger community resilience. The schedule includes three days of practical sessions, two days of theory, and two days for mock drills, ensuring participants are prepared for real emergencies.
Earlier, the programme was chaired by Can Youth programme manager, Nuye Nyekha. Invocation was offered by Pastor Pouhourei Gangmei from Rongmei Baptist Church, and vote of thanks was delivered by Can Youth secretary & director, Zhove Lohe.
