Heavy rainfall triggered a sudden rise in the Shepe River in the early hours of July 5, caused floods that damaged farmlands and fisheries in Chingong and Yongnyah villages under Longleng district.
According to Chingong village council chairman, Lungmei M, the flood washed away mature plantations such as arecanut, coconut, litchi and apple trees, many of which were five to six years old. Fisheries in the affected areas were also damaged.
He informed that the farmlands were part of the National Mobile Monitoring System (NMMS) under the Rural Development Department and had been geotagged for its 1st and 2nd phases. The damage is likely to affect implementation of future phases. The chairman appealed to concerned authorities to assess the losses and provide compensation to the affected farmers.
The flood also damaged the economic importance road bridge, disrupting transportation for villagers and commuters. Initial estimates suggest that the total loss to farms and fisheries is around Rs. 15 lakh.
