Incessant rainfall in past few days had caused flash flood causing damage to jhum fields at Chanka village under Wokha district. The flood has disrupted agricultural activities and affected around 20 farmers in the area.
Speaking to Nagaland Post, VDB secretary association Changpang block president, Sentsüdy P.B Sen Yanthan, informed that floodwaters have submerged large portions of farmland.
He said that standing crops, including paddy and a variety of cash crops such as maize, ginger, chili, pumpkin, ash ground and other vegetables, have either been washed away or damaged.
Yanthan said that affected farmers were currently unable to access their fields and the extent of damage due to the highwater levels. Besides crop loss, several field huts and temporary farm shelters have also been damaged. As most families at Chanka village rely on farming for their livelihoods, the flooding during this crucial period of cultivation has caused serious hardship.
Community members have sought the intervention of the district administration and concerned departments. They requested the responsible authorities to undertake a proper damage assessment and provide immediate relief to help the affected families.
