DIMAPUR: With the rise of home based businesses and growing demand for imported food products, coupled with increasing risks of food adulteration, the Food Safety Team, Kohima Zone, under the establishment of the Chief Medical Office, Kohima, led by the Designated Officer and Food Safety Officer, carried out an inspection drive on provisional stores at Jail Colony, Kohima. The drive aimed to check misbranded food products and create awareness among Food Business Operators (FBOs).
According to a press release issued by Designated Officer, Food Safety Administration, Kohima, Kezhangulie Yimchunger, the inspection revealed several shops operating without valid FSSAI License/Registration Certificates.
Many home based food products were found without complete labelling, including best before dates and addresses of FBOs. Some labels carried expired license/registration numbers, and the concerned FBOs were directed to renew or update their licenses immediately to avoid further action.
The release further stated that certain shops engaged in repacking food products lacked label declarations and FSSAI license numbers of manufacturers and re packers. Imported food products stored and displayed for sale were also found without the requisite FSSAI license number. It was noted that any FBO storing or selling such products must ensure that imported items carry the name and address of the importer along with the license number, failing which the products would be deemed illegal.
Additionally, some food articles that were not permitted to be sold loose from the main packet were displayed as individual items without labels.
As the drive was conducted as part of an awareness exercise, FBOs were warned to ensure self compliance and exercise caution regarding food products sold under their control. The release also advised the public to not purchase products without proper labelling and to report defaulting sellers to the concerned authority.
