Forest department, Wildlife Division, Dimapur has issued a public advisory following information received on March 26 about movement of a “big cat” around Chudi village area in Wokha district, and consequent to camera traps set up on March 27 at all possible entry and exit points where movement of a leopard was captured by a camera trap, possibly attracted by the livestock in the village area.
Accordingly, wildlife warden H Tokaho Kinimi has advised avoiding venturing out into nearby forest/secluded areas or traveling alone, especially after sunset. He stressed that if movement was unavoidable, it was to be done in groups and with adequately bright torches.
Pointing out that observance of some simple measures could help avoid any untoward incidents, he also advised keeping livestock secure in robust enclosures at night, and immediately report to the Department of Environment, Forests & Climate Change in case of any unusual disappearance of livestock.
He suggested keeping the surroundings devoid of garbage, as this attracted feral dogs and other livestock, which in turn attracted the wild animals.
He said the focus should be on better garbage disposal and sanitation.
He also called for keeping immediate surrounding areas, clear of thick grasses and bushes, keeping residence areas well-lit at night, and avoiding giving heed to rumours and rumour-mongering, especially on social media.
Appealing for maintaining vigil, Kinimi stressed that in case of sighting of the wild animal, approaching or provoking the animal should be avoided, while reporting immediately to wildlife authorities.
Besides sharing his own mobile number (87318 21345), he also shared the mobile number of Hukai H Zhimo, officer-in-charge, WLCCU, Wildlife Division, Dimapur (87878 90194).
Describing such movement as not completely unusual, he however said it called for greater vigilance by the general public.
Stating that the department was aware of the issue and taking all necessary steps, he sought cooperation and support of the general public and all concerned to help tackle the issue in an appropriate manner.
