An exposure visit for Forest Guard trainees was successfully held at Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Dimapur, ICAR Nagaland Centre, and the National Research Centre on Mithun (NRCM), Medziphema.
The visit aimed to offer practical training in vermicomposting, Integrated Farming Systems (IFS), organic farming, animal husbandry and fruit and vegetable processing.
Dr. Phool Kumari, senior scientist and head, KVK Dimapur, welcomed the trainees and outlined the outreach efforts of the centre. Dr. Rajesh Kumar, Director of Safety, emphasized the role of sustainable and eco-friendly technologies in both agriculture and forestry.
Technical sessions were held by various scientists. Dr. Aabon Yanthan (Fruit Science) led a session on fruit crop processing. Jyotish Barman (Fishery) presented IFS models with focus on fish pond management, followed by a field visit.
Dr. Ebibeni Ngullie (Animal Science) shared insights on livestock practices like poultry, rabbitry and dairy farming, while Dr. Akshay Ujjwal (Agronomy) trained the group on organic farming and vermicomposting. A hands-on session by farm manager Imliakum Pongen guided trainees in preparing compost using local resources.
As a token step towards adoption, KVK Dimapur handed over a vermi pit to the Department of SEFTI.
The trainees also visited NRCM, Medziphema, and learned about Mithun conservation practices. The species is considered important to the region’s economy and culture.
Altogether, 32 Forest Guard trainees participated, alongside SEFTI officials and KVK staff, including Dr. Bendangla Imsong, Dr. Chingakum Sima Chanu and Dr. Moanaro.
The visit encouraged cross-sectoral learning and promoted integrated approaches to sustainable development.
