Forest & police personnel sensitised on biodiversity conservation, wildlife crimes

Department of Environment, Forests & Climate Change, Nagaland State Biodiversity Board (NSBB) and Aaranyak Guwahati jointly organised a sensitisation programme on “biodiversity conservation and combating wildlife crimes” for forest and police personnel on June 23, in the conference hall of the Forest Offices Complex, Kohima.
According to a DIPR report, special guest, M. Senthil Kumar, IFS, CCF (M&E) in his speech, said the pertinent issue required wider awareness from the top to the grassroots and expressed enthusiasm to a meaningful journey as they combat wildlife crimes.
Guest of honour, senior SP Kohima, Kevithuto Sophie emphasised on collective roles and responsibilities of all stakeholders to curb wildlife crime and conserve biodiversity while PCCF & chief wildlife warden and HoFF, Nagaland (Retired), Satya Prakash Tripathi gave a brief background of the programme and spoke on the status of wildlife crimes in Nagaland.
A recorded message of secretary-general and CEO, Aaranyak, Bibhav Kumar Talukdar was read during the programme while senior consultant, Aaranyak, Bijay Sankar Bora gave a background of the Organisation.
During the technical session, FRO NSBB, Savinuo Kikhi gave a PowerPoint presentation on Biodiversity Act 2002 and Nagaland State Biodiversity Rules, 2012.
She highlighted important provisions of BD Act and status of its implementation in Nagaland while senior manager, Aaranyak, Dr. Jimmy Borah gave a PowerPoint presentation on “overview of wildlife crimes focusing on rhino and tigers at the global and regional level” and “identification and understanding commonly used wildlife products in the region”.
Meanwhile, project officer, Aranyak, Ivy Farheen Hussain gave a PowerPoint presentation on “wildlife crimes on rhino and tigers at the local level” and modus operandi of common wildlife crimes in the region.
She also spoke on Aaranyak’s DETERS initiative and role of stakeholders in combating wildlife crime.
The following points emerged during the evaluation of the programme: continuity of such sensitisation programme in future for forest and police personnel; necessity of awareness on conservation of forest, wildlife, and biodiversity at grassroots; funding to communities for continuity of conservation works and synergistic working of Forest department, police department, NSBB, WCCB, MOEF&CC, centre, Aranyak, and other agencies for creating awareness among the public.
The programme was chaired by DFO Kohima forest division, Raj Kumar M, while conservator of Forest & member secretary, Nagaland Pollution Control Board, K. Hukato Chishi delivered welcome address while closing remarks were delivered by NSBB consultant.
The programme also saw participation of more than 50 officials from the Forest department and Police department.
