Former Upa-Lokayukta of Nagaland and retired principal district and sessions judge, Mayang Lima, passed away Sunday morning at Jorhat Mission Hospital, Assam, following injuries sustained in a road accident on October 2. He is survived by his wife and two daughters.
The funeral service of Mayang Lima will be held on Monday (October 6) at 11 a.m. at Senden Riju, near ISBT, Purana Bazaar, Dimapur. According to reports, the accident occurred near Golaghat while Lima was travelling from Tuli to Dimapur along with three occupants, including the driver. One woman passenger died on the spot, while Lima and two others sustained critical injuries. He was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit at Christian Medical Centre, Jorha.
However, Mayang Lima succumbed to injuries on Sunday morning.
Mayang Lima, son of late Limakumzuk, from Chuchuyimlang village, served in various capacities during his career, including district and sessions judge, registrar of Gauhati High Court (Kohima Bench), vigilance commissioner Nagaland, and later as the first Upa-Lokayukta of Nagaland.
After completing his tenure as Upa-Lokayukta, Mayang Lima had also unsuccessfully contested the 2018 general elections as NDPP candidate from 22-Arkakong assembly constituency.
Condolences
Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio has expressed deep sorrow over the demise of former Upa-Lokayukta of Nagaland, Mayang Lima, who passed away on October 5.
In a condolence message to Mrs. Amongla Longkumer, Rio described Lima as an able lawyer and a committed public servant who served the state government in various esteemed capacities. Even after his retirement, Rio said Lima’s dedication to public duty remained unwavering as he continued to serve as the Vigilance Commissioner and later as the Upa-Lokayukta.
Rio recalled that Lima’s entry into electoral politics, contesting from the 22-Arkakong assembly constituency in 2018, was yet another expression of his passion for serving the people.
He further described Lima as a person widely admired for his kindness, humility and generosity, always extending a helping hand to those in need. Rio said Lima’s sudden demise was a great loss to society, as he still had much to offer for the welfare of the people, adding that the void left by his passing would be difficult to fill.
As the state mourns his demise, Rio said the legacy Lima leaves behind- a life defined by integrity, compassion and service- should continue to inspire everyone.
Conveying heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, Rio prayed that Almighty God grant them strength and comfort during this difficult time and for the departed soul to rest in eternal peace.
Patton: Deputy chief minister, Y. Patton, has expressed deep sorrow over the demise of Mayang Lima, former Upa-Lokayukta of Nagaland.
In a condolence message, Patton described Lima as a dedicated public servant who upheld justice with sincerity and commitment throughout his distinguished career. He noted that Lima’s contributions to the judiciary and public service reflected a profound sense of duty and responsibility.
Patton stated that Lima’s legacy would be remembered with respect and honour by the legal fraternity and all those who had the privilege of working with him.
He extended condolences to the bereaved family, friends, and well-wishers, and prayed for strength and comfort during this difficult time. He also prayed for the departed soul to rest in peace.
NCD: Naga Council Dimapur (NCD) also mourned the demise of Lima, describing him as a towering figure in Nagaland’s judicial and public service landscape, having served in various key capacities including principal district & sessions judge, registrar of Gauhati High Court Kohima Bench, and State Vigilance Commissioner. He was also the first Upa-Lokayukta of Nagaland, remembered for his integrity and commitment to justice.
The council stated that late Lima was a dedicated public servant and a true son of the soil, whose humility and honesty left a lasting impact on the community. His contributions to the legal fraternity and his compassionate engagement with humanitarian issues were highlighted as hallmarks of his legacy.
NCD said that Lima’s absence was an irreplaceable loss to his family, the community, and the Nagas as a whole. It added that his life and work will continue to inspire generations and that his legacy should be celebrated with honour.

DUCCF: Dimapur Urban Council Chairmen Federation (DUCCF) has expressed deep sorrow over the demise of Mayang Lima, former principal district and sessions judge and Upa-Lokayukta of Nagaland.
In a condolence message, DUCCF said Lima served with utmost dedication and integrity throughout his career, describing him as “a man of great wisdom and discipline” and “a beacon of justice whose life and service stood as a testimony to fairness, humility and commitment to truth.”
The federation said his profound sense of duty and unwavering principles had left a lasting mark on the judicial fraternity and in the hearts of those who had the privilege to know and work with him.
DUCCF acknowledged with deep respect his years of service to the people and the State, adding that his passing was a loss not only to his family but also to society at large.
