Foundation Club organized an awareness programme, with the theme, “forest fire and its impact on environment” at Merama Community Hall, Phesema on February 28.
The programme sponsored by NYK Kohima was attended by 50 youths from Southern Angami Students’ Union, Phesema Youth Society and Phesema Students’ Union.
Addressing the gathering, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Sidramapa MC, IFS, said major cause of environmental degradation were scarcity of water, forest fire and deforestation.
He said water shortage was due to lack of water storage facilities despite the state receiving sufficient rainfall over 2000mm.
Sidramapa also suggested proper planning and strategies to tackle forest fire, adding that fire is the most powerful and important for life, and if gone beyond control could be disastrous “beyond imaginable”.
