Fakim Village Students’ Union (FVSU) said it strongly backed the allegations of large-scale corruption raised by a courageous citizen, Tsumongthong Yim of Fakim village, Kiphire district, over the construction of the 20 km Pungren-Mimi to Fakim road under PMGSY Phase VIII.
In a statement, FVSU president Limtemong and general secretary Lethreyam said documents obtained through RTI revealed that the project– estimated at Rs. 727.12 lakh for construction and R.s 36.46 lakh for maintenance– was awarded to Hexad Syndicate in March 2012. Despite the project being declared “complete” and a total bill of Rs. 727.06 lakh released to the contractor, on-ground verification showed that hardly any substantive work was executed.
Calling it a “blatant example of corruption,” the union condemned the alleged misappropriation and demanded immediate and stringent action from the state government. It urged a thorough investigation into the matter and said those found guilty must be held accountable.
Citing the Supreme Court judgment in Vineet Narain vs. Union of India (1998), FVSU reminded that corruption posed a serious threat to the rule of law and democracy. It pointed out that the case amounted to a violation of transparency and accountability principles under the RTI Act and the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.
The union lauded Tsumongthong Yim for his courage and determination in pursuing justice despite challenges, and urged authorities to take his allegations seriously.
Outlining an urgent call to action, FVSU demanded that a thorough investigation into the allegations be conducted. It also demanded stringent action be taken against the contractor and officials involved.
The union said that the people of Fakim and adjoining villages– Penkim, Thrüntsuvong, Tsundang, Sangtsong and Vongtsuvong—should receive the promised road project.
FVSU further sought invocation of the Prevention of Corruption Act, prosecution of those found guilty, and recovery of misappropriated funds. It also pressed for completion of the road as per the original plan.
Reaffirming its commitment to transparency, responsible governance and public welfare, FVSU said that by taking these steps, the government could restore public trust and prevent recurrence of such incidents.
