Gallery and retaining wall of football ground collapsed at Lakhuti village

Incessant rain for the past few days triggered landslide in Wokha district and on July 22, a portion of gallery and the retaining wall of the football ground at the Khelo India Centre in Lakhuti village collapsed.


Chairman of Lakhuti village, Mhonthung Yanthan, told Nagaland Post that the portion of the wall collapsed due to the incessant rain and not related to the quality of construction or workmanship of the contractor. He said that the persistent rain over the past few days led to a landslide.


Contractor of the project, K.N Mhonthung Lotha, reiterated that there was no compromise in the construction specifications and that the collapse was a result of the natural calamity. He assured that, as a gesture of social responsibility, repairs to the damaged areas will be carried out after the monsoon season.

EAC Aitepyong P Pukha Lam, visited the site on July 23 and said that report will be submitted to Deputy Commissioner, Wokha who is also the Chairman of the District Disaster Management Authority.
It may be noted that the football ground project under Khelo India was inaugurated by advisor of Youth Resource and Sports S. Keoshu Yimkhiung on December 16, 2023 at Lakhuti village. The ground project was estimated to be nearly Rs. 5 crore.


Addressing the major landslide in various areas of Wokha, ADC Wokha K. Furhesie informed that the concerned area administrative officers will be submitting reports on the various landslides and other calamities. He assured that the administration will address the issues promptly, whether through rehabilitation or relief efforts.
