An awareness program on gender based violence and the role of women in building peace was organised by Assisi Centre for Integrated Development (ACID) and National Domestic Workers Movement (NDWM) Nagaland Region with the support of International Domestic workers Federation (IDWF) on November 16 at Assisi Auditorium.
A press release by ACID stated that the participants were welcomed by ACID director, Sr. Pramila, who also explained the purpose of the awareness program.
She lamented that there was an increase of violence against women within a family structure and stressed on how a woman could become a builder of peace in such situations.
CHILDLINE Dimapur, coordinator, Loza enlightened the participants on the issue of gender based violence at home, the work place and society.
Loza said, “Violence against women and children, mainly the girl child, is one of the most prevalent human rights violations in society. It knows no social, economic or national boundaries.”
Though gender based violence undermines the health, dignity, security and autonomy of its victims, Loza lamented that it remains shrouded in a culture of silence.
She urged the participants to be aware of their roles in preventing such circumstances as it bears lifelong negative impacts on an individual’s life.
Peace Channel, founder and director and NEISSR principal, Dr. FR. C.P. Anto, enlightened the participants on the role of women in building peace.
He said women have a very important role to play in building peace in the family, community and society at large and added that peace building requires the involvement of women.
