Khiamniungan Students Union (KSU), on November 22 held a joint meeting with the Thsoiphu Students Union (TSU), Thsoiphu Village Council and School Managing Members, and deliberated the prevailing conditions in Government High School (GHS), Chiphur, under SDEO Noklak.
A press release by KSU president Hatho and assistant general secretary Talamong expressed deep pain at the “unjust treatment” of the students of GHS, Chiphur, as learnt during the meeting.
With most of their subject syllabus yet to be taught and the exams looming, the students had to stage a peaceful protest at the school premises demanding their due share of the Right to Education, the release said.
According to the release, despite several appeals and requests made by the TSU, the school continues to be neglected both by teachers and the concerned department. Irregular teacher attendance has created untold hardships and burdens for the student community, it stated adding that most of the syllabus had been left not covered despite the approaching examinations
According to KSU, almost 80% of the Science syllabus is yet to be covered as the teacher had been on leave and later resigned without a reliever.
Another Science teacher attended classes for only one day this academic session.
According to the press release, the KSU also learnt that major portions of different subjects are yet to be taught to the students because the teachers are irregular. “This is unprofessional on the part of the teachers and unacceptable as well” the union asserted.
Although GHS Chiphur has enough appointed teachers, the classes do not have enough teachers to teach the students.
The KSU questioned the Education department how the students could be expected to perform well in their examinations when there were no teachers present to teach them.
It warned the concerned authorities regarding the negligence of their duties and stated that should any untoward incident occur on account of the mentioned reasons, the concern department would be held solely responsible.
