GHSS Chukitong facing severe infrastructural neglect

Established in the year 1941, Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS) Chukitong, one of the oldest educational institutions in Wokha district, is currently facing severe infrastructural challenges.
Chukitong Town Students’ Union (CTSU) president Zaremo Ngullie and Chukitong Town Youth Organization (CTYO) president Liremo R. Kikon, highlighted the alarming state of the school’s infrastructure.
They said the school was struggling to provide even the most basic facilities despite its long-standing legacy and contribution to education in the region.
They said that the primary section classrooms were in a dilapidated condition, with some structures considered unsafe for use. The duo also said that teachers were frequently compelled to conduct classes in corridors or open areas, particularly during the warmer months. “The classrooms in the lower section are extremely small, and during summer they become unbearably stuffy due to the lack of ventilation,” they stated.
They also said another major concern was lack of proper electrification. While the main campus receives partial solar-powered electricity, the said it was insufficient. The secondary campus—also used for academic activities—has no power supply at all, the duo said.
Given Chukitong’s hot and humid climate, they said absence of fans and adequate ventilation severely hampered both teaching and learning.
Besides poor classroom and power conditions, CTSU and CTYO informed that the school lacked essential sanitation facilities. They said there was no dedicated toilet for staff, forcing female teachers in particular to endure difficult working conditions.
“Our children deserve a safe and supportive learning environment. We sincerely hope the authorities will treat this as a priority,” the two bodies stated.
CTSU and CTYO said they have submitted multiple appeals to the department over the years, but no tangible action has been taken so far.
Once regarded as a pillar of academic excellence in the region, GHSS Chukitong now stands as a stark reminder of administrative neglect, they said and sought government’s immediate intervention.
“Without prompt and concrete support from the government, the school’s ability to continue delivering equitable and quality education is at serious risk,” they underscored.
