
As part of annual activities, Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS) Wokha, Legal Literacy Club (LLC) visited and conducted legal awareness programme on February 14, at district jail.
During their visit, deputy superintendent of district jail, Yanrenthung Kikon welcomed the LLC members and program officials and expressed its gratefulness for paying a visit and spreading legal awareness to the inmates.
Further, Kikon encouraged the LLC members to take up such initiatives as it was benefiting the society.
Speaking on “prisoners rights”, resource person, superintendent of observation home, Wokha enlightened the inmates giving special references to the Indian constitution that actually empowers the inmates to get access the fundamental rights especially of Article 14, 19 & 21.
He said that the prisoners could not enjoy full fundamental rights but that does not cease certain rights guaranteed to them by just being a human. He also spoke on the rights to cruel and unjust punishment, right to voice out if they are discriminated and right to free legal aid.
He further asked the prisoners to table any grievance to the concerned officials and the court if any. LLC teacher in-charge Mharoni also motivated the inmates to change one’s habits and live a life of dignity. She emphasised on the techniques to transform the old lives and lead a meaningful one.
Earlier, the programme was chaired by LLC member, Mercy Khuvung, invocation prayer by LLC Enibemo Kikon and experience sharing by LLC, Hachio. Later, vote of thanks delivered by LLC Libeni Ezung. Altogether 58 participated in the programme.
