Global IDD Day observed with call for awareness and action

DIMAPUR

In observance of Global Iodine Deficiency Disorders (IDD) Day, marked annually on October 21, the IDD Cell under the Directorate of Health and Family Welfare, Kohima, has called for increased public awareness and collective action to combat iodine deficiency and its associated health risks.
According to the release, iodine is essential for the production of thyroid hormones that regulate growth, development, and metabolism. Deficiency in iodine can lead to a range of disorders including goitre, hypothyroidism, mental retardation, and developmental delays—particularly among children and pregnant women.
Globally, iodine deficiency remains one of the leading causes of preventable brain damage. However, it is easily preventable through the universal use of iodized salt, which has proven to be the most effective, safe, and affordable method to ensure adequate iodine intake. While millions of households benefit from this intervention, gaps in awareness and accessibility continue to persist.
On Global IDD Day, health experts urged communities to:
• Use only adequately iodized salt in daily meals
• Check iodine levels on salt packaging or with testing kits
• Spread awareness about the harmful effects of iodine deficiency
• Support national programmes promoting universal salt iodization
The observance of the day is not only about raising awareness but also about embracing collective responsibility. Governments, civil society, schools, health workers, and families all play a vital role in ensuring that no child suffers from preventable conditions caused by iodine deficiency.
As the day is commemorated, the Directorate encouraged all stakeholders to reaffirm their commitment to a healthier future—where every household consumes iodized salt and every child is given the opportunity to grow, learn, and thrive to their full potential.
