‘Go back to China’: Northeast dance group faces alleged racial slurs

A viral video showing alleged racial abuse of a dance group from Northeast India in Patna Railway Station has triggered widespread outrage, highlighting concerns over discrimination faced by people from the region.
The group, comprising performers from Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, and Manipur, had travelled to Patna for a cultural event when the incident occurred.
According to videos circulating online, a woman reportedly stopped members of the group from using a public washroom and demanded identity proof. During the argument, she was heard saying, “Voter ID do,” while a member of the group responded, “Who are you, and why should we show you anything?”
The situation escalated when the woman allegedly used racial slurs such as “Chinese,” “momo,” and “chinki,” drawing strong objections from the group.
In another clip reportedly from a government hospital in Patna, individuals, including a man said to be part of the staff, were seen mocking the group’s appearance and telling them to “go back to China.”
One of the dancers, who recorded the video, said the incident left them shaken. “We come from the Northeast to travel, but incidents like this make us scared,” she said. The group had reportedly visited the hospital for medical treatment after one of their members sustained a minor injury during rehearsals.
The video quickly went viral, with users across platforms condemning the incident. Many users tagged authorities, including Patna Police, demanding strict action.
Several public figures and citizens expressed solidarity, calling the incident “shameful” and urging respect for diversity.
Following the backlash, Patna Police said they have taken note of the incident and are looking into the matter.
The hospital administration has also reportedly formed an internal committee to investigate the conduct of its staff, though no disciplinary action has been announced so far.
