Gorkha Community observed Balidan Diwas (Martyrs’ Day) in honour of veer saheed Major Durga Malla and veer saheed Captain Neikezhakuo Kenguruse at GPPK Multi-utility Hall, Chandmari Kohima.
Gorkha Public Panchayat Kohima (GPPK) organized the event along with all NGOs, Clubs and Jatiya Sansthas of the Gorkhas in Kohima with Inspector General of Assam Rifles (North), Maj Gen Vikas Lakhera as special guest.
Addressing the gathering, Maj Gen Lakhera said it was sad when someone has to sacrifice their life, but the sacrifices of the two brave hearts for the country should be a motivation to the future generations.
As the officer of Assam Rifles, he also lauded the Gorkhas for their bravery in line of duty and for the nation by making immense sacrifices.
He expressed happiness that Gorkhas have been upholding the tradition and culture and passing it to the younger generation.
Chaired by Yommi Rai, the programme commenced with lighting of lamp by the dignitaries while IGAR(N), parents of Captain Late Kenguruse and others joined in paying floral tribute to the martyrs’. GPPK president Santu Thapa delivered the welcome address while Chandmari Gorkha Union secretary Samir Thapa tendered the vote of thanks.
On the occasion, Manav Gurung was felicitated for securing 6th position in HSSLC 2023 Science Stream. Highlights of the programme included special cultural performances by Monica and friends, Deepti Gurung and friends, patriotic song by Karishma Baraily and welcome song by Vivela Club.
GSU: Gorkha Students’ Union (GSU), alongside its 12 units, commemorated the 79th Martyrdom Day of Major Durga Malla, a Gorkha freedom fighter at Gorkha Community Hall, Medziphema. The programme began with a tribute to Major Malla, who was executed in 1944 at the age of 31. Sambu BK of Medziphema Gorkha Union honored the sacrifices of Gorkha freedom fighters in his address.
