Nagaland Governor, PB Acharya, on the eve of ‘World No Tobacco Day’, has called for collective action to reduce the burden of disease, death and economic consequences caused by tobacco use and exposure to second-hand smoke (SHS) globally.
‘World No Tobacco Day’ is a global campaign, inviting everyone – from global leaders to the public in all countries – to focus on the health risks associated with tobacco use and to advocate for effective policies to reduce tobacco consumption.
A Raj Bhavan communiqué stated that the governor has also called upon the government, civil society groups and public to spread awareness and take all possible initiatives to highlight the enormous damage caused by the use of tobacco to health, development and the economy.
Further, Acharya cautioned that the coming generations must be timely protected from the devastating consequences of tobacco consumption and exposure to tobacco smoke. He also reminded that all must reaffirm the commitment to reduce this menace.
Every year, on May 31, the World Health Organisation (WHO) and partners mark World No Tobacco Day, highlighting the health and other risks associated with tobacco use, and advocating for effective policies to reduce tobacco consumption. The focus of World No Tobacco Day 2018 is “Tobacco and heart disease.”
