Nagaland Governor, P.B. Acharya has made a strong pitch for rainwater harvesting in Nagaland and even announced 50% subsidy for setting up 1000-litre water tank within Kohima town to the first 20 applicants so as to encourage citizens to take up water harvesting.
The governor announced that the water tanks would be procured by Raj Bhavan and, once all arrangements were made by the applicants at their home or office to set up the tank, the subsided tanks would be released.
Asserting that rainwater harvesting was the need of the hour, Acharya said switching to the eco-friendly system was neither complicated nor time consuming and result in a wide range of benefits for one’s home or business.
Discussing the issue with chief minister Neiphiu Rio at Raj Bhavan, Kohima on Thursday, Acharya said at his initiative the Bhavan was on the verge of completing a 1.5-lakh litre water harvesting reservoir.
He informed Rio that water tanks were put at various locations of the gubernatorial residence compound to harvest rain water.
Acharya opined that since most parts of the State saw rainfall for six months or more, rainwater harvesting would be beneficial for the people. He encouraged citizens to set up water tanks and harvest rainwater to address the water scarcity problem in the State.
Application for the subsidy could be submitted to the governor’s secretariat or one could even call up 0370-2245789 during office hours for further details.
During the meeting, Acharya also shared details of his meeting with representatives of Gayatri Project Limited to ensure that the four-lane work of Kohima-Dimapur highway was completed on time.
Stating that the people should not be made to suffer because of delayed work, the governor also sought a copy of the weekly progress report on the work progress. He also urged the chief minister to ensure that basic amenities were provided to labourers working at the work sites.
