Gov visits Longwa, assures support for disaster-hit Mon

DIMAPUR: Nagaland Governor Nand Kishore Yadav, accompanied by commissioner and secretary to Governor Thavaseelan K., Fiirhesie Nyuwi and other officials, visited Longwa village in Mon district on August 18.
According to DIPR report, he was received at COB Longwa 42 Assam Rifles helipad by Deputy Commissioner Mon, Wennyei Konyak, Superintendent of Police, MP Rajya Sabha Phangnon Konyak, advisor Konngam Konyak, and Tonyei Konyak, Chief Angh of Longwa.
Addressing the people at the Chief Angh’s residence, the Governor said it was a privilege to interact with the Konyak community. He conveyed condolences on behalf of the people of Nagaland to families affected by the recent disaster in Mon, which claimed lives and caused extensive damage.
Yadav noted that the calamity highlighted Nagaland’s vulnerability to extreme weather events such as heavy rainfall, flash floods and landslides, which cause destruction beyond physical damage. He appreciated the courage and dedication of the District Administration, NSDMA, SDRF, police, security forces, line departments, civil society organisations, churches, youth groups and volunteers for their efforts in search, rescue, evacuation, relief and restoration.
Commending the spirit of solidarity and compassion shown by the people of Mon, he stressed that while immediate relief was essential, rehabilitation and reconstruction must follow. He urged focus on restoring roads and infrastructure, and emphasised that future development must integrate disaster resilient designs and environmental protection.
The Governor appealed to citizens to follow building regulations, land use norms and technical advice, particularly in vulnerable areas. He said disasters could not always be prevented, but preparedness, planning and timely action could reduce their impact. He encouraged youth to play an active role in disaster preparedness, awareness and community support, turning the recent experience into an opportunity to strengthen systems from the village level upwards.
Highlighting the resilience and strong community bonds of the Konyak people, Yadav urged them to transform the difficult experience into a renewed commitment to rebuild better, safer and stronger, while ensuring development reaches every community with respect for environment and heritage. He assured that both Central and State governments would continue to extend support for relief, restoration and rehabilitation, but emphasised that a resilient Mon would be built through partnership between government, local institutions and the people.
Konyak Union president Yamao Konyak expressed gratitude to the Governor for his visit and briefed on the losses caused by the July 19 landslide and flood. Konyak Students’ Union president Temwang Konyak said seven schools and 318 students were affected. Chief Angh Tonyei Konyak appreciated the Governor’s visit and, in his vote of thanks, requested government support for road upgradation to aid Longwa’s recovery.
