Nagaland Governor, PB Acharya, has called upon students to work and advocate for betterment of the environment, saying global warming was a reality and a threat to the world.
Addressing the Annual Flower Show of Don Bosco Higher Secondary School in Kohima on Saturday, the governor congratulated the school for conducting the annual flower show for the past many years. He said organising such events would enhance student’s appreciation of ecological conservation and love for nature.
Asserting that education was one of the most important instruments for men and women, Acharya said “empowerment through education should lead us to work for the welfare and development of the society and to build an environment friendly Nagaland.”
He opined that climatic condition of Nagaland was favourable for production of flower crops in protected environments.
In this regard, the governor stated that the state could make use of the potential for flower and orchid trade.
Governor said since he was from Mumbai it was a very rare for him to witness so many beautiful flowers.
Further, the governor also called upon the students not to be self centred, but to give back to their school once they passed out.
“It should be your social responsibility to make sure that your school improves on all fields and you should play a role in strengthening the society,” Acharya said.
Also, emphasising on the importance of the preserving ones culture and traditions, the governor said the mother tongue was one’s identity, and that one should not forget it.
At the event, the governor also handed away the prizes to the winners of the Annual Flower Show.
Governor and his wife also took a tour of the exhibition and appreciated the flowers displayed at the flower show.
Earlier, DBHHS principal, Rev Fr KC Vincent, delivered the welcome address. Rachel Menehonu spoke on the importance of the environment and the effects of climate change. Special songs were presented by Elizabeth of class 12 (Arts) and classes IX and X students.
