DIMAPUR: Nagaland governor, Nand Kishore Yadav, held a review meeting with officials of the Coffee Board of India and the Department of Land Resources, Government of Nagaland, at Lok Bhavan, Kohima, on September 1 to assess the progress, challenges and future prospects of coffee cultivation in the State.
During the meeting, the Coffee Board presented a detailed report on the status of coffee cultivation in the North Eastern Region and Nagaland. Discussions focused on strengthening coffee as a sustainable livelihood option for farmers and exploring Nagaland’s potential in specialty and premium coffee production, a DIPR report stated.
It was noted that coffee cultivation in Nagaland has steadily grown with support from the Coffee Board and the Department of Land Resources, with both Arabica and Robusta varieties being cultivated across several districts. The Governor reviewed initiatives for expansion, productivity improvement, quality upgradation, mechanisation, training and infrastructure development. The Coffee Board has also extended support through financial assistance, drying yards, mechanisation and capacity building programmes.
Challenges highlighted included poor road connectivity, limited processing infrastructure, climate concerns, small landholdings, shortage of skilled labour and restricted access to international markets. At the same time, opportunities were identified in specialty coffee production, organic certification, coffee tourism, value addition, local roasting enterprises, café culture, e commerce and youth entrepreneurship.
The Governor emphasised the need for a focused and coordinated approach to strengthen the entire coffee value chain-from cultivation and improved farm practices to processing, branding and marketing. He stressed enhancing farmers’ income through quality production and value addition, while creating opportunities for local entrepreneurs and youth.
The meeting also noted the growing coffee culture in Nagaland, with increasing numbers of roasters, cafés and entrepreneurs contributing to a vibrant local ecosystem. Rising domestic demand and the potential for premium and specialty coffee were seen as promising avenues for farmers and entrepreneurs.
Expressing confidence, the Governor said that with sustained institutional support, improved infrastructure, scientific practices and effective market linkages, Nagaland has the potential to emerge as a significant producer of premium coffee in the country.
