Governor’s ‘At Home’ reception draws flak

Naga Hoho (NH) has expressed concern over Nagaland Governor P.B. Acharya addressing the gathering at Governor’s ‘At-Home’ in Hindi on the occasion of celebration of 66th Republic Day celebration January 26, 2015.
In a press release issued by its media cell, Naga Hoho said while promotion and propagation of Hindi in the state through schools and other institutions was welcomed, it found governor addressing a non-Hindi speaking gathering in Hindi “unreasonable”, fully knowing that the majority of them could not comprehend a single word of what was spoken.  Also, the hoho said while it respected and regarded all religions, it was astonished at the depiction of a Hindu goddess on the official handout of the same function.
“It is very much out of place that the image was used in a non-religious official function in a Christian dominated state,” said Naga Hoho.  Hoho asserted Nagas were not against Hindus or Hinduism, but objected to “this very particular action of the Governor which conveys a wrong controversial message.” Being the first citizen of the state, Hoho said it preferred governor to show “certain amount of neutrality and sensitivity to the sentiments of the general Naga public in future for the best interest of the people”.
On Thursday, NPCC also expressed shock over the handout published on religious lines depicting “Bharat Mata” standing on a ‘Lotus’ and holding the tricolour with the country’s map as background.
It said at a time when the country was faced with onslaught of the RSS-led communal forces, “needless action” of the Governor was “perhaps an ominous sign of greater agenda espoused by the BJP-RSS combine, being unfolded to change the secular fabric of the nation”. NPCC said after P.B Acharya assumed office, it expected that he would shed off “his earlier RSS upbringing and mindset, to uphold the sanctity and dignity” of the office.
