Govt restores commercial LPG supply, lifts curbs

NEW DELHI, JUN 25 (PTI): The government on Thursday restored liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) supplies to commercial consumers such as hotels, restaurants and other businesses to pre-crisis levels, and lifted sector-specific restrictions imposed during the recent West Asia conflict, as energy supply concerns ease with stabilising global markets.
The Petroleum Ministry said restrictions on commercial LPG supplies were removed following improved domestic production and the expected arrival of imported LPG cargoes. Bulk LPG supply, which had been suspended at the onset of the crisis, has also been partially resumed at 50 per cent of pre-crisis consumption levels.
“In a major relief to industrial and commercial LPG consumers, the government has removed all sectoral restrictions on the supply of non-domestic packed LPG and restored supplies to the levels prevailing prior to the West Asia crisis,” the statement said.
It added that bulk LPG supply relaxation provides significant relief to commercial and industrial users and reflects improvement in the overall LPG supply situation.
The Centre of High Technology under the ministry has been tasked with issuing organisation-wise allocation of enhanced C3/C4 streams for petrochemical and other critical sectors and submitting regular reports to the ministry.
The decision follows broader signs of easing global energy stress, with crude oil prices returning to pre-war levels, suspension of crisis briefings, and normalising fuel supply chains as shipping and energy flows stabilise.
The government reiterated that uninterrupted LPG supply to households remains its top priority and directed state-run oil marketing companies to maintain detailed databases of commercial and industrial users to improve supply planning.
It also reaffirmed plans to shift eligible commercial and industrial consumers to piped natural gas (PNG) under city gas distribution networks where available, in line with its long-term clean energy transition strategy and improving infrastructure readiness across urban and industrial clusters nationwide.
