State government has issued a strict directive requiring all vehicle owners– both government and private– to remove any unauthorized flags, emblems, names, symbols, stickers, seals, logos, or other features which are placed on the vehicle registration plates (number plates) within 45 days.
In a notification issued on March 18, commissioner & secretary Robert Longchari, cited Rule 50 and Rule 51 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, which govern the form, manner, size, and specifications of registration marks on motor vehicles across India.
Rule 50 mandates the use of High-Security Registration Plates (HSRP), while Rule 51 prescribes precise dimensions, colours, and placement for letters and numbers to ensure uniformity, visibility, and security.
The directive follows a recent communication from the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways letter dated November 7, 2025, which emphasized strict nationwide enforcement of these rules.
In the interest of public safety and compliance, the state government has instructed vehicle owners to ensure that registration plates remain free of unauthorized additions.
The government has cautioned that failure to comply within the 45-day period from the date of the notification would invite strict legal action against defaulters.
