Commissioner and secretary, School Education and State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), Kevileno Angami, exhorted government teachers to rededicate themselves to their profession in order to improve the academic standing of their respective schools and the state.
She was addressing the annual conference cum felicitation programme of Nagaland Government Higher Secondary School Employees Association (NGHSSEA) Friday at Dr. N.K. Government Higher Secondary School Seikhazou, Kohima. Kevileno also urged the teachers to be dedicated, sincere and proactive, and said government teachers were “highly qualified”, best trained, and capable of delivering quality education. He described teachers as the pillars of the education system in the state, and encouraged them to rededicate themselves to their profession to revive the education system. Kevileno said in the past, government schools produced successful pupils due to the dedication and sincerity of the then teachers. She, however, lamented that the quality of education has depleted over time, which has resulted in poor performance by students.
With improvement in the past few years, the commissioner and secretary said the public was now reposing their faith in government-run educational institutions and government teachers to live up to society’s expectations by discharging their duties sincerely. Apart from academic curriculum, Angami encouraged teachers to instil life values in students, emphasising the importance of guiding students to improve their critical thinking skills. With the implementation of the NEP 2020, Kevileno said there will be a massive transformation in the education system and asked the teachers to be well-versed to meet the challenges.
The commissioner and secretary also lauded the government teachers for the “excellent result” in the recently declared NBSE’s High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) and Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate (HSSLC) 2024 examinations. She said it was possible because of the commitment of the government teachers. Appreciating NGHSSEA for initiating such a programme, Kevileno expressed the hope that it would serve as a platform for the government teachers to rededicate and renew themselves, and learn from each other’s experiences.
During the programme, it was reported that between 2022-2024 nine Government High Schools (GHS) were upgraded to Government Higher Secondary Schools (GHSS), bringing the total number of GHSSs to 54 (17 Science, 5 Commerce and 32 Arts). At present, there are 780 GHSS teachers and 23,563 GHSS students (2023-2024).
