Govt warns consumers on cyber fraud linked to LPG bookings

NEW DELHI, MAR 19 (IANS):

Instances of cyber fraud linked to LPG bookings have been reported from several states, with fraudsters circulating malicious files such as “GAS BILL UPDATE APK” via platforms like WhatsApp to mislead consumers.
Users have been cautioned against downloading or installing suspicious files, as these may allow unauthorised access to personal data and bank accounts. Citizens have been advised to rely only on official platforms for LPG bookings.
Meanwhile, Centre has directed states and UTs to strengthen administrative and logistical measures to ensure uninterrupted LPG distribution. Authorities are monitoring supply at the district level and facilitating smooth movement of LPG tankers and cylinders.
States have been asked to issue public advisories to prevent panic buying, promote judicious use, and ensure dissemination of accurate information. Consumers have been urged to avoid panic bookings, use digital platforms, and refrain from visiting distributors as home delivery continues.
Centre said it was prioritising uninterrupted LPG supply and PNG expansion, especially for households and key sectors such as hospitals and educational institutions. Measures include enhanced refinery production, revised booking intervals of 25 days in urban areas and up to 45 days in rural areas, and prioritised allocation.
To ease demand, alternative fuels such as kerosene and coal have been permitted, with increased allocation directed through Coal India and Singareni Collieries. States have also been encouraged to expedite new PNG connections and facilitate additional commercial LPG allocation.
