Greater Noida: Husband, Father-in-Law Nabbed After Woman Jumps to Death in Dowry Case

Greater Noida, May 18 (IANS): A 24-year-old woman identified as Deepika, daughter of Sanjay and a resident of Kudi Khera village under the Badalpur police station area, died after jumping from the roof of a house in Jalpura village under the Ecotech-3 police station area in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh, following alleged dowry harassment by her in-laws, with police arresting her husband Hrithik and father-in-law Manoj on Monday. Deepika’s family alleged that it was a dowry-related murder, claiming she had been subjected to mental and physical torture ever since her marriage approximately 14 months ago, with her in-laws continuing to demand additional dowry despite the family having spent nearly Rs one crore on the wedding including the cost of a Fortuner car. The family also claimed that several injury marks were found on the deceased’s body, leading them to suspect foul play, and demanded strict action against the accused. However, preliminary police investigation suggests the case involves suicide committed due to distress caused by dowry harassment, with further action to be taken based on the findings of the post-mortem report and other evidence.

The woman’s body was taken into custody by police after the incident was reported and has been sent for post-mortem examination, while a case has been registered under relevant sections of the law based on a written complaint filed by the deceased’s father. The marriage between Deepika and Hrithik, son of Manoj and a resident of Jalpura village, had taken place with great pomp and grandeur approximately 14 months ago, but turned tragic as the young woman allegedly succumbed to the pressure of continuous dowry demands and harassment. Family members who rushed to the scene upon receiving news of the incident directly accused the in-laws of murdering Deepika. Police officials have stated that every aspect of the case is being thoroughly investigated to determine the exact reasons behind her sudden death.
