An elderly woman in her late 60s was killed after she was struck by lightning at around 2 p.m. on Tuesday at Ndunglwa village, 12 km away from Peren Town.
The incident occurred when the deceased woman identified as Reminzeule, and her daughter were on their way home from field after a day’s work. A strong lightning suddenly struck an Oak tree just beside them and knocked them down.
Speaking to Nagaland Post over phone, Ndunglwa village council chairman, Zierangbe Ikie, said that the duo were knocked down by a lightning strike rendering them unconscious. Fortunately, the daughter was unhurt and gained consciousness after some minutes. Thereafter, she made a phone call to her brother and informed about the incident. Volunteers from the village then rushed to the spot and brought the body to the village.
The lightning that claimed the life of a woman occurred prior to the heavy downpour and hailstorm that hit most parts of Peren district.
On the same day at around 2:30 p.m., parts of Peren district especially Jalukie valley was hit by heavy rain and hailstorm resulting in destruction of many properties. The hailstorm destroyed CGI roofs of various houses, cars and other properties besides vegetable and plantation crops in the area.
