Entrepreneurs Associates (EA) under its project of Uplifting Women Street Vendors, in partnership with Caring Friends and the K&T Keditsu Foundation, organized a health camp and a livelihood enhancement programme at Pfutsero Town for vegetable vendors as well as wholesalers of the town on May 26.
A press release from EA I/C communications and editor katalys, Neikule Doulo said that around a hundred women participated in the programme organized at Baptist Theological College auditorium. Free Cervical Cancer screenings were also made available for the women.
A team of three doctors comprising of a cancer surgeon, a gynaecologist and an orthopaedic with nine nurses and a pharmacist conducted the health camp that offered free Pap smear tests and medicine.
Speaking to the women vendors at the inaugural session, prior to the health camp, doctors from the K&T Keditsu Foundation highlighted the need for women to take care of themselves and their health seriously. Dr. Thejavinuo Keditsu spoke on the ‘Basics of Women Health’ while Dr. Keduovinuo Keditsu gave an “Introduction of Cervical Cancer”. The programme was chaired by Vechulou Kanuo, director of the Chakhesang Women Welfare Society (CWWS) who is the Pfutsero partner of EA for the project.
The health camp was followed by a session on “Livelihood Enhancement” led by the EA team. Neikule Doulo spoke on the need for the women vendors to increase their sources of income by taking up other livelihood options alongside their vegetable vending.
EA’s Pfutsero branch manager, Cukhoyi Chiero spoke on the need for the women to plan financially for their future and stressed on the need for the women to put aside part of their income as savings. This is the second in a series of events conducted at Pfutsero Town for the women vendors.
