A one-day Health Mela was organized at Community Health Centre (CHC) Niuland on April 28 by the Department of Health & Family Welfare, Dimapur, under the XV Finance Commission, in collaboration with Niuland Town Council. The mela registered 280 OPD cases.
Addressing the gathering, CMO Dimapur, Dr. T. Yetovi Tuccu, emphasized the importance of promotive and preventive healthcare and regular screening in rural communities. He noted that lifestyle diseases such as cancer, diabetes and hypertension were major causes of death today, and urged the public to adopt balanced diets, regular exercise, and avoid sugar and processed foods. He also highlighted the ongoing HPV vaccination programme for girls aged 14 to prevent cervical cancer. Chairman of Niuland Town Committee, V. Samuel Holo, said the district’s slogan “Clean Niuland, Green Niuland” reflects commitment to both environmental and public health. He appreciated the Health Department for bringing specialist services to the grassroots and urged neighboring villages to extend support to such programmes.
Gynecologist Dr. Imna Meren Phom cautioned against self-medication, particularly in abortion cases, noting several recent hospitalizations due to severe bleeding. He advised proper medical consultation, family planning, and spacing of at least three years between childbirths for maternal health. He also urged communities to discourage early marriage, especially for women below 20 years, citing risks to both mother and child.
Specialist services were provided by a team comprising Dr. Manwen Konyak (Neurologist), Dr. Yimlongchaba (Dermatologist), Dr. Imna Meren Phom (Gynecologist), Dr. Seyiekhrietuo Rutsa (Pediatrician), Dr. Kanato (ENT), and Dr. Alemsenla (AYUSH). The mela aimed to provide specialist services at the grassroots and promote early detection of lifestyle diseases.
