Heavy rain, hailstorm wreak havoc across Nagaland

The recent torrential downpours accompanied by strong winds have resulted in widespread destruction across many parts of the state. In Dimapur, hailstorms were reported on Saturday night, causing significant damage to houses and properties in several areas.
The heavy rainfall also damaged roads, agricultural fields, houses and properties across the state. The storm also uprooted trees and disrupted power lines, leaving hundreds of homes without power.
As reported, Dimapur also grappled with heavy showers on Friday night and Saturday morning, which resulted in various colonies being inundated with flood water in the city.

Earlier, Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) had predicted that the state would experience light to heavy rainfall, which was expected to be fairly widespread.
Due to heavy rainfall in Shamator district on Saturday, the main road has been blocked by landslide, effectively cutting off all means of transportation.
According to official bulletin, bridges were washed off by the floodwaters and several acres of paddy fields have been inundated.

At Satami village under Zunheboto district, many terrace fields and properties along the Tizu river were damaged due to the heavy rainfall. The swollen river flooded agricultural fields, washed away bridges and eroded the banks, affecting the livelihood of many farmers/villagers.
Portions of road and a bridge connecting Suruhuto and Aghunato were reportedly washed away by the swollen Phijo river.
India Meteorological Department (IMD) on April 20 predicted heavy rainfall accompanied with thunderstorms/lightning and gusty winds likely at isolated places over the North East region during April 21-24.

IMD attributed the weather conditions due to the cyclonic circulation over northeast Assam and a trough running from east Bihar to this cyclonic circulation in lower tropospheric levels.
IMD said fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall/snowfall accompanied with isolated thunderstorm & lightning & gusty winds (30-40 kmph) very likely over Arunachal Pradesh and scattered to fairly widespread rainfall over Assam & Meghalaya and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura during April 21-24.
It also predicted isolated heavy rainfall very likely over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam & Meghalaya during April 21-24 and Nagaland, Manipur on April 21.
