A new school building of Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS), Purana Bazar, was inaugurated on Friday by Advisor, Industries and Commerce, Hekani Jakhalu.
Addressing the gathering as guest of honour, Hekani urged teachers and students to reflect on the value of dedication and hard work. She challenged teachers and government employees to introspect on whether they were doing justice to the salaries they draw, while calling upon students to recognize the sacrifices of their parents and strive for excellence. Stressing that success is “99% hard work and 1% luck,” she encouraged students to remain focused and committed to their goals.
Jakhalu underscored that success is not merely defined by wealth but by the ability to pursue one’s passion while contributing meaningfully to society. She also highlighted the importance of community participation, calling on local leaders and residents to take collective ownership of the institution. With the completion of the new infrastructure, she urged students to bring pride to the school and expressed hope that GHSS Purana Bazar would emerge as one of the best-performing schools in Nagaland.
Delivering her address as special guest, Commissioner & Secretary for School Education and SCERT, Kevileno Angami, informed that the new building was constructed under the State Plan with support from NABARD. She emphasized that while infrastructure enhances the learning environment, its true purpose lies in nurturing young minds. Kevileno called on teachers to foster curiosity, critical thinking and compassion, stressing that education should shape responsible and empathetic individuals who contribute positively to society.
Principal of GHSS Purana Bazar, Pipi Gloria Chishi, in her welcome address, highlighted the school’s journey since its establishment in 1961. She recalled the challenges of operating in a dilapidated building for many years, but said the institution continued to uphold its commitment to education. She noted that the new building would significantly improve teaching and learning outcomes, while also drawing attention to persistent challenges such as high student migration. She expressed aspirations for future development, including converting the old site into a playground and introducing a commerce stream at the higher secondary level.
Earlier, the programme was chaired by vice principal I. Ajungla, with invocation and dedicatory prayer by Associate Pastor, SBC Purana Bazar, Hikavi A. Achumi. Students presented a special number and benediction by GT Limawapang.
