H&FW deptt geared up for first round of IPPI 2016

Directorate of health and family welfare (H&FW) has informed that Nagaland along with the rest of country would conduct the first round of intensive pulse polio immunization (IPPI) on January 17, 2016.
A statement from the directorate of H&FWF stated that the department was all geared up to administer polio drops to over 2.3 lakh eligible children from 0-5 years throughout the state in 2,308 polio booths to be manned by 9,232 vaccinators and 462 supervisors along with vaccine and other logistics.
India has remained free of wild polio cases since 2011 and India’s unprecedented progress against polio has led to certification of south east region including India by World Health Organisation (WHO) in March 2014.
However, the department said India remained at high risk of importation till the whole world was free of wild polio virus.
Therefore, H&FW department stated that as per the recommendations of the India Expert Advisory Group (IEAG) on polio, National Immunisation Days (NIDs) are to be conducted covering all the children in the age group 0-5 years of age using trivalent oral polio vaccine (tOPV).
According to the release, special focus would be given to migrant population with an aim to prevent importation of polio cases. The department has appealed to all sections of the people, agencies (government and non-government including security forces and police), organisations, churches and community leaders and especially parents of children below 5 years to come forward and ensure that all eligible children receive the “two drops of life” (polio drops) on January 17, 2016.
