Historic campaign medal unveiled at Nagaland State museum

A program to unveil a historic Campaign Medal was held at the Nagaland State Museum, directorate of Art and Culture, Kohima on November 16.

The highlight of the program was the donation of the “NAGA 1879-80” campaign medal by Charles Chasie, a prominent author, independent researcher, documentary filmmaker, and journalist.

In his address, Chasie emphasized the medal’s historical significance, stating, “I was very keen for the ‘NAGA 1879-80’ Medal to be housed in the museum so that Nagas, especially the younger generation, can learn the history of their people and be proud of who they are.”


The medal, now permanently displayed at the museum, commemorates the Battle of Khonoma (1879-80). It was originally awarded to Sepoy Lall Singh Raie of the 44th Gurkha Regiment (later the 8th Gurkha Rifles) for his bravery during the campaign.


The event was chaired by Talitemjen, guide lecturer, and included a special address by Kovi Meyase, secretary to the Government of Nagaland, department of Art and Culture and vote of thanks by Adela Moa, director of Art and Culture.
