Hornbill Festival features Nagaland’s first dog show

The Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services, Nagaland, marked a first for the Hornbill Festival with the inaugural State-level Hornbill Dog Show at the Pony Farm on November 5, at Kigwema village.
The event was graced by advisor of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services, Kazheto Kinimi, MLA, who also serves as the Chairman of the State Animal Welfare Board of Nagaland, as the special guest.
In his address, Dr. Imomanen Tzudir, Director of the Department, highlighted the profound historical bond between humans and dogs. “Dogs were among our first domesticated companions, serving as herders and guardians for livestock nearly 9000 years ago,” he stated. He noted their evolving roles in modern society, from guides and police K9 units to therapy animals, emphasizing their significance for social companionship.
Dr. Tzudir explained that the show aimed to celebrate this unique relationship. “This event is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the beauty and capabilities of one of God’s beautiful creations and the deep bond we share with them,” he said. He described the show as a much-anticipated festival highlight that brings together enthusiasts, breeders, and owners statewide to foster friendship, learning, and responsible pet ownership.
The competition showcased an incredible diversity of breeds, from local indigenous dogs to exotic varieties, each demonstrating unique traits, discipline, and elegance. A special performance by the Dog Squad of the 78th CRPF Battalion, Zubza, delighted the audience.
