Human Rights Day is celebrated annually across the world on December 10 every year. The date was chosen to honour the United Nations General Assembly’s adoption and proclamation, on December 10, 1948, of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), the first global enunciation of human rights and one of the first major achievements of the new United Nations.
Peace Channel and Kohima Law College observed the day by organizing programs to mark the event.
Peace Channel: Peace Channel observed “Human Rights Day” at Don Bosco Youth Centre, Wokha on December 10.
A press release from Peace Channel media cell stated that, resource person Myingthingo Jami, peace activist spoke about the importance of human rights.
He said that rights were very fragile as everyone violates them unknowingly one way or the other. Jami presented the characteristics of human rights and some important articles pertaining to it.
Vincent Kikon gave a keynote address and Nchumthung Odyuo gave the welcome address in the program chaired by Renthunglo Jami. Fr. Jossy vice-principal DBS offered the invocation.
KLC: Kohima Law College (KLC) observed International Human Rights Day at its college premises on December 10.
A press release from KLC media cell stated that professor-in-charge Kezhokhoto Savi presented the key note address where he emphasized on Article 1 of universal declaration of human rights, “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights”. Savi highlighted that this “Human Rights Day” marked its 70th anniversary of universal declaration of human rights, a milestone document that proclaimed the inalienable rights entitled to a human being.
He said that human rights were at the heart of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGS) because in the absence of human dignity one cannot drive sustainable development.
The release also stated that KLC will remain closed for winter vacation from December 11 and will re-open on February 4, 2019.
